The New York Mets have made a strategic move by trading outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for second baseman Marcus Semien, as multiple sources confirmed on Sunday. This trade is designed to strengthen the Mets’ infield and infuse their lineup with an accomplished All-Star before the start of the 2026 season.
At 35, Semien is a three-time All-Star who still has three years left on his seven-year, $175 million deal. Although he was sidelined for the last five and a half weeks of the 2025 season due to a broken left foot sustained on August 21, Semien has consistently delivered impressive performances. He was an integral part of the Rangers’ championship run in 2023, appearing in all 162 games, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 100 RBIs.
In 2025, Semien played 127 games prior to his injury, recording a batting average of .230, alongside 15 home runs and 62 RBIs. Over his impressive career that spans 1,629 games with teams like the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and Texas Rangers, he boasts a .253 average, 253 home runs, and 801 RBIs. Remarkably, Semien has been recognized with third-place finishes in American League MVP voting three times across different teams: the A's in 2019, the Blue Jays in 2021, and the Rangers in 2023.
Brandon Nimmo, 32, consented to waive his no-trade provision to facilitate this transaction. Nimmo is under contract for five more seasons on an eight-year, $162 million agreement. Since debuting with the Mets in 2016, he has established himself as a dependable outfielder, playing more than 150 games in each of the last four seasons. In 2025, he hit .262 with a personal best of 25 home runs and 92 RBIs over 155 games. Cumulatively, Nimmo holds a .262 batting average, 135 home runs, and 463 RBIs in 1,066 games with the Mets.
This exchange underscores the Mets’ aim to enhance their infield while acquiring a seasoned player with valuable postseason know-how. Semien is anticipated to elevate both the offensive and defensive capabilities of the squad while Nimmo offers the Rangers a solid outfield presence with reliable hitting.
As Semien joins the Mets, fans can expect heightened performance both offensively and defensively in the approaching season. His extensive experience and consistent track record in major league baseball make him a pivotal addition. Conversely, Nimmo remains a vital component for the Rangers as they work on team improvement.
This trade reflects both teams' dedication to refining their rosters and striving for success in the upcoming MLB season. The Mets gain a top-tier player in Semien, while the Rangers acquire an reliable outfielder in Nimmo. Supporters from both clubs will be keen to see the impact of these new players in 2026.
