On Monday, Melania Trump unveiled the White House's inaugural Christmas decor since her family's return, introducing a charming theme named “Home Is Where the Heart Is.” This festive display coincides with the build-up to the United States' 250th anniversary next year, infusing this year’s celebrations with a heartfelt sense of patriotism.
The iconic mansion has undergone a transformation with the assistance of numerous volunteers from various states. The elaborate setup includes: 75 wreaths, 51 Christmas trees, over 700 feet of garland, 2,000 light strands, 25,000 feet of ribbon, 2,800 gold stars, 10,000 butterflies, and 120 pounds of gingerbread, all aimed at creating a magical holiday vibe.
This year's occasion features a significant alteration, as President Donald Trump's extensive ballroom construction project has led to the demolition of the East Wing and its colonnade, changing visitor pathways through the residence. The official White House Christmas tree, previously located in the East Wing, now stands proudly in the Blue Room, dedicated to Gold Star families with its arrangement of gold stars and state-themed ornaments.
While construction continues, public tours will resume on Tuesday but will be limited to the State Floor. Guests will journey through the East Room, Green, Blue, and Red Rooms, along with the State Dining Room, Cross Hall, and Grand Foyer. However, the Ground Floor, encompassing the Library and Vermeil and China Rooms, will remain off-limits.
Despite these temporary restrictions, the White House anticipates tens of thousands of visitors for holiday tours, receptions, and celebratory events. Access will now be granted via the North Portico through a newly installed semi-permanent walkway.
Throughout the residence, each room showcases its distinctive theme. The East Room boasts red, white, and blue decor featuring golden eagle toppers, underscoring the upcoming America250 celebrations. In the Green Room, whimsical family-related decor is on display, featuring large portraits of George Washington and Donald Trump crafted from over 6,000 Lego-style puzzle pieces. The Red Room, adorned with numerous blue butterflies, emphasizes youth and reflects Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative.
As always, the seasonal highlight is the gingerbread White House in the State Dining Room, depicting the South Portico along with a meticulous view of the Yellow Oval Room. This creation utilizes gingerbread, chocolate, pastillage, and royal icing, maintaining a beloved holiday tradition.
Melania Trump, along with Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, dedicated part of their day at Joint Base Andrews assembling care packages and writing holiday cards for deployed service members alongside military spouses. The First Lady emphasized the strength of families who provide support to service members during prolonged separations.
