France captain Kylian Mbappe will miss Monday's World Cup qualifier against Iceland due to an ankle injury he suffered in the team’s recent match against Azerbaijan, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed on Saturday.
The 26-year-old star, who has been in outstanding form this season with 14 goals in 10 appearances for Real Madrid, was injured in the 83rd minute of France’s 3-0 win over Azerbaijan. During that match, Mbappe had already scored a goal and provided an assist.
“The national coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed Mbappe’s withdrawal. He has been released to his club and will not be replaced for the Iceland match,” the FFF stated.
France currently leads Group D, securing nine points from three matches with a perfect record. The team will travel to Reykjavik to take on third-placed Iceland, missing their key forward in the process.
This development raises concerns for France as they aim to maintain their unbeaten streak in the group and continue their strong run toward World Cup qualification.
