May 16 Marks Start Of China Cultural Revolution

May 16 Marks Start Of China Cultural Revolution

Post by : Shakul

May 16 remains one of the most important dates in modern Chinese history as it marks the official beginning of China’s Cultural Revolution in 1966. On this day, the Chinese Communist Party released the historic “May 16 Notification,” which accused several officials within the party of supporting counterrevolutionary ideas.

The movement was launched under the leadership of Chairman Mao Zedong, also known as Mao Tse-tung. Mao believed that enemies of communism had entered the government, education system, and cultural institutions. The campaign soon turned into a nationwide political and social movement that deeply changed China for years.

The Cultural Revolution lasted from 1966 until 1976 and affected millions of people across the country. Schools and universities were closed, intellectuals were targeted, and cultural traditions were destroyed in many places. Young people known as the Red Guards actively participated in political campaigns and public criticism sessions.

Historians describe the Cultural Revolution as one of the most turbulent periods in China’s modern history. Many senior officials lost power, thousands of families were displaced, and countless citizens suffered persecution during the decade-long movement.

The May 16 Notification became the official signal for the beginning of the campaign. The document criticized what it called “revisionists” within the Communist Party and warned that capitalist thinking was threatening the socialist system in China.

Apart from the Cultural Revolution anniversary, May 16 is also remembered for several important world events. In 1770, Marie Antoinette married the future King Louis XVI of France. In 1929, the first Academy Awards ceremony took place in Hollywood.

On the same date in 1975, Japanese mountaineer Junko Tabei became the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In 1997, US President Bill Clinton publicly apologized for the Tuskegee Experiment, a controversial medical study in American history.

Today, the Cultural Revolution remains a sensitive and widely discussed chapter in Chinese history. Researchers and historians continue studying its long-term political, cultural, and social impact on China and the world.
