Manchester United's head coach, Ruben Amorim, has addressed the potential January transfers of Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee. He acknowledged the players' wish for more playing time but reiterated that the club's priorities come first.
Currently, both players have limited appearances this season; Zirkzee, the Dutch striker, has accumulated just 82 minutes in the Premier League, while England’s Mainoo has played only 138 minutes since August. Neither has started a top-flight match this season, which diminishes their chances of being selected for their respective national teams.
Reports suggest that the players are contemplating transfers during the January transfer window to secure more frequent play ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup set for June 11 to July 19 in North America. The looming World Cup makes this opportunity even more pressing for both athletes.
As he prepared for Manchester United's league fixture against Everton, Amorim expressed his understanding of both players' situations. “Having been a player, I grasp their feelings, and I aim to support my players in every circumstance,” he remarked. “Their happiness matters to me. With the World Cup approaching, I fully comprehend the stakes involved.”
However, Amorim firmly noted the precedence of the club. “Manchester United's interests are paramount. If I can assist both the club and the players, then I will be pleased. If not, I must prioritize the team. We need to focus on the club and the team, and then matters will unfold accordingly,” he clarified.
Despite their current limited roles, opportunities may arise for Mainoo and Zirkzee in the near future. With Benjamin Sesko injured and Bryan Mbeumo along with Amad Diallo expected to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, the duo could find themselves with increased chances to showcase their abilities.
Amorim’s remarks suggest that, although he appreciates the players' aspirations, any decisions regarding transfers will prioritize the requirements of Manchester United. He emphasized the importance of club performance and results over individual ambitions while still showing support for the players' goals.
Both Mainoo and Zirkzee are young talents, and consistent playing time is vital for their development. A move in January might be beneficial for their chances of rejoining their national squads, but Amorim’s approach underscores the delicate balance between personal ambitions and club responsibilities.
Manchester United supporters will be on the lookout to see if the two players earn more playtime in the league or other competitions. The January transfer window could provide new prospects, but Amorim’s statements reinforce that any decisions will maintain the club's long-term vision.
