Malaysia is set to reignite the deep-sea search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, nearly ten years after its mysterious disappearance. The transport ministry has announced that this renewed search will initiate on December 30, rekindling hope among families who have yearned for closure.
Flight MH370 vanished on March 8, 2014, shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing, with 239 passengers on board. Just after losing radar contact, the aircraft made a sudden turn away from its planned flight path. Subsequent satellite signals indicated the plane flew for several hours before reportedly landing somewhere in the distant Indian Ocean, a hazardous area that has challenged search efforts for years.
In this revived search, the U.S.-based marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity will conduct a focused 55-day operation in targeted regions identified as the most likely sites for the plane’s wreckage, based on new analyses. The search is part of a previously arranged “no-find, no-fee” contract, meaning payment is contingent on locating the wreck.
The Malaysian government has allowed the search to cover a newly designated 15,000-square-kilometer area, which is thought to have the highest chance of revealing the aircraft's remains. An earlier search attempt was suspended in April due to unsafe weather conditions.
The mysterious loss of MH370 prompted one of the largest and most expensive multinational search operations in history, yet no confirmed debris was retrieved from the ocean floor. Components connected to the aircraft later washed ashore in various locations across East Africa and Indian Ocean islands, providing limited insights.
With access to advanced underwater technology and a more refined search area, authorities express that this mission has genuine potential to uncover the truth about MH370’s fate.
