Mac Allister and Díaz drive Liverpool and Bayern to continued Champions League success

Mac Allister and Díaz drive Liverpool and Bayern to continued Champions League success

Post by : Meena Ariff

Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Arsenal all preserved flawless starts in the Champions League, each posting important victories in midweek group fixtures.

At Anfield, Alexis Mac Allister produced the match-winner as Liverpool edged Real Madrid 1-0. Thibaut Courtois had kept Madrid alive with eight fine saves before Mac Allister met Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick with a 63rd-minute header to decide the game.

Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to Liverpool and was greeted by jeers from the home crowd, while Real Madrid found it hard to cope with Liverpool’s sustained pressure. The result may offer Arne Slot’s team a timely boost after a run that included six defeats in eight matches.

In Paris, Bayern Munich extended their spotless record with a 2-1 victory over reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. Luis Díaz struck twice in the first half to give Bayern the lead, but was later dismissed for a reckless challenge on Achraf Hakimi. The win marked Bayern’s 16th consecutive victory across all competitions.

PSG rallied, with Joao Neves heading home in the 74th minute, yet they could not overturn the early deficit. Bayern boss Vincent Kompany lauded his players’ display while warning that the title race remains open.

Arsenal continued their impressive form in Prague, beating Slavia Prague 3-0. Teenager Max Dowman, aged 15 years and 308 days, set a Champions League record as the youngest player after entering as a substitute. Bukayo Saka converted a penalty and Mikel Merino added a second-half brace to seal the win.

Elsewhere, Tottenham ran out 4-0 winners against FC Copenhagen, Atletico Madrid defeated Union Saint-Gilloise 3-1, Italian sides Napoli and Juventus were held to draws, and Monaco claimed a 1-0 victory at Bodo/Glimt.
