Liverpool’s struggle in the Premier League continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday. The Merseyside club, champions of England, had hoped to build on their 2-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday, a victory that had ended their worst run in over 70 years. However, their performance against Sunderland once again raised questions about their consistency this season.
Sunderland took the lead in the 67th minute when Chemsdine Talbi capitalized on a rare mistake by Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who lost possession in a dangerous area. Talbi’s shot deflected off Van Dijk into the net, leaving goalkeeper Alisson with no chance. For much of the match, Sunderland appeared the better side, threatening to secure their first victory at Anfield since 1983.
Liverpool’s late equalizer came in the 81st minute when summer signing Florian Wirtz cut past two defenders and unleashed a shot, which deflected off teammate Nordi Mukiele before finding the net. The goal was officially recorded as an own goal, denying Wirtz his first Liverpool strike but salvaging a crucial point for the home side. Despite the deflection, the goal lifted Liverpool from the brink of a potentially demoralizing defeat.
Sunderland nearly snatched a win in added time as Wilson Isidor raced past defenders and around Alisson, only for his effort to be brilliantly cleared off the line by Federico Chiesa. The dramatic end highlighted both Liverpool’s defensive frailties and Sunderland’s tenacity in the second half.
Manager Arne Slot opted to leave talisman Mohamed Salah out of the starting lineup for the second game in a row due to the Egyptian striker’s recent dip in form. Salah came on in the second half and provided added pace and attacking energy, but the team struggled to dominate in the first half, allowing Sunderland to control significant portions of play.
Liverpool had other chances to secure the win. Florian Wirtz missed an early opportunity after goalkeeper Robin Roefs mishandled the ball, while Dominik Szoboszlai’s long-range effort just before halftime was well-punched by Roefs. Joe Gomez’s cross also created a near-miss for Alexis Mac Allister, whose header narrowly went wide. Sunderland had their own early scares when Trai Hume tested Alisson with a long-range effort that was palmed onto the crossbar.
Despite the late equalizer, Liverpool’s challenges continue. They have now failed to win any Premier League matches after conceding first since their victory over Tottenham Hotspur in April. Slot acknowledged the team’s struggles, noting the unluckiness of the deflected goal and the difficulty in breaking down a well-organized Sunderland side.
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, praising their belief and resilience. “It’s a privilege to play here at Anfield, and the players showed great character,” he said. “We created chances, stayed focused, and ultimately deserved the point we earned.”
Liverpool remain eighth in the Premier League with 22 points, trailing leaders Arsenal by 11 points, and continue to face scrutiny over their inconsistency. Meanwhile, Sunderland, sixth in the table with 23 points, will be buoyed by their display and look to build on a strong performance at one of England’s most iconic grounds.
This result underscores Liverpool’s ongoing challenge this season, as they strive to regain form and consistency to mount a serious Premier League challenge while balancing injuries and form issues across key players.
