After an extensive musical journey and her acting debut last year with Call Me Bae, followed by The Royals this year, singer-actor Lisa Mishra has made her eagerly awaited return to theatre. Her recent performance at the Prithvi Theatre Festival marks a significant moment as she graces the stage again after 15 years in a musical directed by Akarsh Khurana.
“It’s quite overwhelming, as it involves substantial effort,” Lisa confesses. “I had nearly forgotten the commitment required to present a grand live production. While I was thrilled to be back, I admit I felt a bit apprehensive. It’s the ultimate test where my acting and musical careers converge.”
Despite her 15-year hiatus from stage performances, Lisa believes her musical roots have equipped her for the role. “As a musician, the stage feels like home. In acting, we have multiple takes on film, whereas theatre doesn’t allow for retries. However, since I perform live regularly, I feel adequately prepared for this challenge.”
When reflecting on what she missed most about theatre, she reveals, “I longed for the thrill of delivering a live performance in a long format. My touring concerts last about 90 minutes, and those songs are well-rehearsed. But performing a play with new music for an hour and a half while memorizing lines perfectly is an experience I deeply craved.”
Lisa, who has previous experience in musical theatre, acknowledges that returning to the stage after her success in screen acting brings added pressure. “Although I have performed musical theatre before, the stakes feel higher now that I’ve made my mark as an actor,” she remarks.
Looking back on her career, Lisa describes her journey as a “guide for anyone dedicated to hard work.” She emphasizes, “Many assume that a big break means a smooth path ahead. But in a competitive space like Mumbai, continual reinvention and daily perseverance are essential. Work isn’t simply offered; you must hunt for opportunities and continuously strive.”
Next up, Lisa will be starting her filming duties for Call Me Bae Season 2 shortly. “We're set to begin filming soon. Our table read with the entire cast went exceptionally well. Season two promises to be fantastic — the script is impressive, and the characters have developed beautifully,” she shares. Additionally, she provides an update on The Royals Season 2: “It’s still in the initial phases. Pre-production has begun, but we’re still figuring out our characters’ story arcs.”
