South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to meet Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday in Nara City, Japan, a week after his high-profile talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit highlights Seoul’s efforts to balance relations with both neighboring powers amid growing regional tensions.
During the summit, leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including economic cooperation, security challenges, and trilateral relations with the United States. North Korea’s nuclear program and regional disputes between China and Japan are likely to feature prominently in their discussions.
Lee’s recent engagement with China focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring strategic cooperation. His visit to Japan signals South Korea’s commitment to maintaining stable and forward-looking relations with both countries while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.
The talks in Nara will include formal meetings, working dinners, and joint statements, emphasizing practical cooperation in technology, trade, semiconductors, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people ties.
Analysts note that holding the summit in Takaichi’s home prefecture underscores the symbolic importance of trust and collaboration. While historical grievances remain, both sides appear focused on future-oriented dialogue to reinforce regional stability and security.
This visit comes at a critical time as East Asia faces a shifting balance of power, and leaders from Seoul and Tokyo aim to strengthen ties, ensure economic stability, and maintain cooperative frameworks in the face of geopolitical pressures.
