Diljit Dosanjh’s latest release, Kufar, featuring actress and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, has ignited controversy due to parts of its choreography being deemed objectifying by some on social media. The discussion became particularly heated around a specific moment where a female dancer elevates her leg while Diljit stands behind her during the lyric “jannat ke darwaaze kudiye.” In response to the backlash, the song’s choreographers, Shazia Samji and Piyush Bhagat, have now provided insight into their artistic vision behind the dance sequence.
Shazia elaborated in a recent podcast that the lyric possesses a sensual undertone, making the choreography essential in conveying that emotion. She remarked that Diljit’s delivery naturally called for a captivating visual moment. Piyush echoed her sentiments, asserting that the song was designed to be bold, stylish, and internationally appealing. He emphasized that the teaser had already indicated a “sexy dance,” ensuring clarity regarding their artistic direction.
Both choreographers reiterated that the vision for Kufar was clear: it had to embody sensuality, reflecting its mood and appealing to Diljit’s global fans. They affirmed that all individuals on set — including Diljit and Manushi — were aware and supportive of the choreography. They commented that both positive and negative feedback are integral to public discourse and enhance a song's visibility. Shazia also clarified that it was not Manushi performing the contentious move, despite her becoming a target for online trolling.
Manushi Chhillar addressed critiques regarding her role in the music video, remarking that her career is unfairly simplified to mere dance appearances. She advocated for artistic expression, stating that a true appreciation of creativity integrates all forms. Each piece, she reasoned, serves a distinct purpose within the wider artistic spectrum.
In light of the situation, Diljit approached the controversy with levity, commenting in a live video that he was oblivious to the uproar during filming. He labeled his album AURA as distinctly sensual, inspired by the energetic vibes often discussed by his fans at live performances. The album embraces a seductive, performance-oriented aesthetic purposely.
Regardless of the criticism, Kufar maintains robust online engagement, having amassed over 2.9 crore views. The ongoing debate surrounding the track ignites dialogue about artistic freedom, the evolution of popular culture, and the tightrope of sensuality and social responsibility in contemporary music videos.
