The San Jose Sharks are set to visit Seattle for another face-off against the Kraken. Previously, at Climate Pledge Arena, the Sharks inflicted the Kraken's sole home regulation defeat this season, prevailing 6-1. This previous encounter heightens the stakes as both teams ready themselves for the Saturday showdown.
In their last clash on November 5, emerging talent Macklin Celebrini made a significant impact, netting one goal and providing two assists. The first overall pick from the 2024 NHL Draft has been instrumental for the Sharks, racking up 26 points from 10 goals and 16 assists in just 18 contests. His strong presence makes him a key player for Seattle to monitor closely.
Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord faced challenges in the last game, surrendering five goals on 20 shots before exiting early in the third period due to an upper-body injury. He has been sidelined since then, compelling Seattle to depend on their seasoned keepers, Philipp Grubauer and Matt Murray.
Despite Daccord's absence, the Kraken have achieved a 2-1-1 record. Grubauer recently displayed his skills, stopping 23 shots in a 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. The Kraken exhibited resilience, bouncing back three times during the match, which should bolster their morale ahead of the rematch against the Sharks.
Captain Jordan Eberle emphasized that robust defense will be pivotal for their success. While admitting the team's struggles in scoring, he noted they are generating opportunities. Eberle significantly contributed in Thursday's game, scoring two goals, while defenseman Vince Dunn provided one goal and two assists.
Seattle's Kaapo Kakko scored his first goal of the season during that match. Unfortunately, he exited the game early with a lower-body injury. Kakko, drafted second overall in 2019, had already missed the season's start due to a broken hand. Coach Lane Lambert expressed concern for Kakko, highlighting the importance of his contributions and momentum.
After their earlier victory against Seattle, the Sharks embarked on a four-game winning streak, which came to an abrupt end with a 2-0 defeat to the Calgary Flames. Despite the loss, goalie Yaroslav Askarov shined with 34 saves, ensuring a competitive scoreline. Coach Ryan Warsofsky remarked that only Askarov appeared fully prepared for the challenge.
The Sharks’ defeat was unexpected, given Calgary's lowly position in the NHL standings. Forward Tyler Toffoli voiced his frustration, pointing out the lack of urgency and energy that had characterized their early-season success, attributing Calgary's superior effort to their win.
Injury woes also plague the Sharks as forward Jeff Skinner departed Thursday's matchup early due to a lower-body injury. Coach Warsofsky confirmed that Skinner will be unavailable for Saturday’s contest, further straining the Sharks' forward lineup.
Both teams approach Saturday’s encounter with key injuries, evolving momentum, and lessons from their previous meeting. The Kraken are hungry for revenge after their earlier defeat, while the Sharks aim to recover from a disappointing loss. With Celebrini in fine form and the Kraken striving to solidify their game without Daccord, this promises to be a pivotal match for both squads.
