Renowned Bollywood icon Kamini Kaushal, who graced the silver screen for over seventy years, has passed away at the age of 98 at her home in Mumbai, as confirmed by a close family friend.
Sajan Narain, a family associate, shared with reporters, “She passed away late Thursday night at her residence in Mumbai. She was set to celebrate her 99th birthday in February.” The cause of her passing remains undisclosed, and the family has yet to release an official statement.
Kamini Kaushal is celebrated as one of the greatest actresses in Indian cinema. Born in Lahore to Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap, a distinguished botanist from the University of Punjab, she is recognized as the Father of Indian Bryology.
Her acting career began with Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar (1946), a film that secured the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and received accolades at the Montreal Film Festival, marking her as a standout talent in Indian cinema.
During the late 1940s and 1950s, Kamini became a household name, starring in films like Aag, Shaheed, Nadiya Ke Paar, and Ziddi, and establishing herself as one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. She graced the screen alongside legendary actors such as Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor, receiving both critical acclaim and popularity.
Transitioning to character roles in 1963, she continued to captivate audiences with notable performances in films like Do Raaste, Prem Nagar, and Maha Chor. Even in her later career, she maintained her relevance, appearing in major films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express and Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh. Her last on-screen role was a cameo in Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha.
