Civil Rights Icon Jesse Jackson Under Observation for PSP

Civil Rights Icon Jesse Jackson Under Observation for PSP

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Renowned civil rights icon Jesse Jackson is currently in the hospital, undergoing medical observation for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurodegenerative disease he has been grappling with for over a decade, as confirmed by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition on Thursday.

The 84-year-old was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, but a more accurate diagnosis of PSP was established last April, according to the coalition's statement. “The family appreciates all prayers during this time,” the statement noted, shining a light on Jackson’s enduring strength throughout his health struggles.

A central figure in the civil rights movement since the 1960s, Jackson worked alongside his mentor, Martin Luther King Jr., and was in Memphis, Tennessee, when King was assassinated in 1968. Over his extensive career, he has tirelessly fought for the rights of Black Americans and other marginalized groups.

In 2017, he spoke publicly about his Parkinson’s diagnosis, an escalating condition affecting his movement and motor skills. Since then, he has endured additional health setbacks, including hospital stays in 2021 after contracting COVID-19 and following a fall that resulted in head injuries.

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition, which Jackson established, combines his 1971 initiative, “People United to Save Humanity,” and a coalition formed after his initial Democratic presidential run in 1984. This organization persists in promoting social justice, equal opportunity, and civil rights, embodying Jackson's enduring legacy.

Jackson’s hospitalization has led to a wave of support from global leaders and admirers who honor his lifetime of activism and commitment to equality and human rights. As he remains under care, the public continues to share thoughts and prayers for his swift recovery.
