Japan Court Sentences Masanori Aoki to Death For 2023 Killings

Japan Court Sentences Masanori Aoki to Death For 2023 Killings

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A Japanese court has sentenced 34-year-old Masanori Aoki to death for killing four people in a 2023 attack, dismissing the defence’s claim of schizophrenia. In Nakano city, Aoki stabbed two women during a walk and then shot two police officers who arrived after an emergency call.

Gun violence in Japan is extremely rare due to strict firearm laws, making this attack particularly shocking. Incidents involving multiple police officers have not occurred in over 30 years.

The defence argued that Aoki, who suffers from schizophrenia, should receive a life sentence due to diminished capacity. Prosecutors countered that Aoki acted in rage but could distinguish right from wrong, demonstrating "exceptional cruelty and cold-bloodedness." Reports state he wore camouflage, a hat, sunglasses, and a mask, and attacked the women over perceived insults.

After the attack, Aoki barricaded himself in his parents’ home for 12 hours before surrendering. His father, Masamichi Aoki, is the speaker of Nakano city’s assembly. Authorities had urged local residents to stay indoors while updates were communicated via loudspeakers, emails, and door-to-door checks.

Japan strictly regulates gun ownership, allowing only hunting rifles and airguns after rigorous testing, including mental health evaluations. Following this quadruple murder, the government further tightened regulations on “half-rifles” like the one used by Aoki. Such strict rules make attacks like this, and the fatal shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, extremely rare and alarming.
