Ireland’s media regulatory body has initiated formal inquiries into TikTok and LinkedIn, adding to the scrutiny already directed at Elon Musk’s platform X. This action highlights rising worries that prominent social media networks may not entirely adhere to European Union regulations which mandate accessible systems for reporting illegal content.
Just last month, X was scrutinized by the regulator following numerous reports indicating that the platform displayed delays or inconsistencies in handling flagged unlawful content. Now, TikTok and LinkedIn will undergo the same level of examination, reflecting a broader commitment to ensure online platforms safeguard users and adhere to legal standards.
According to EU regulations, digital service providers are obligated to provide user-friendly reporting tools that enable efficient flagging of illegal content. These guidelines aim to create a secure digital environment while holding global social media firms accountable.
The Irish watchdog, responsible for overseeing platforms based in its territory, possesses the authority to impose fines as high as 6% of a company's annual global revenue if violations are established. This power underscores the significance of compliance for tech giants operating throughout Europe.
This investigation further demonstrates the EU's commitment to promoting transparency and user safety online, indicating that platforms must enhance their reporting systems or risk substantial penalties. Experts suggest that this could incentivize companies to rework their reporting features to align with legal requirements and consumer expectations.
