The Iraqi national football team is preparing for their upcoming World Cup playoffs, having been drawn against the winner of a matchup between Bolivia and Suriname. The team secured its playoff spot by overcoming the United Arab Emirates with a 3-2 aggregate score, highlighted by a 2-1 victory in Basra this past Tuesday.
Head coach Graham Arnold, who succeeded Jesus Casas last June, emphasized the necessity of a positive outlook and thorough preparation as Iraq gears up for these critical matches. “It’s essential that we keep our spirits up and prepare effectively for the game,” Arnold stated, underscoring the importance of off-field training, especially given that the playoffs will take place in Mexico, a venue unfamiliar to the team.
Iraq's historical connection to the World Cup goes back to 1986, marking their only finals appearance in Mexico. This adds an extra motivational layer for players and coaches alike, as they strive to return to the grandest stage of football after several years.
Bolivia, which finished seventh in the South American qualifying rounds, is set to clash with Suriname to determine who will face Iraq in the playoff. While FIFA has yet to announce the specific dates and venues, preparations are underway for both teams. Arnold pointed out that understanding the tactics of their opponents and the challenges associated with playing in Mexico will be vital for Iraq's success.
With a wealth of experience, Arnold previously led Australia to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, overcoming the UAE and Peru in decisive matches. His background in intense playoff situations is anticipated to be instrumental in Iraq's quest to achieve their second World Cup appearance.
The players have positively reacted to Arnold’s leadership, prioritizing fitness, tactical discipline, and mental strength. Acknowledging the need for resilience and teamwork, they prepare for the challenges posed by potential South American or Caribbean opponents.
The World Cup 2026 will be historic, expanding to 48 teams, which opens up fresh opportunities for nations like Iraq on an international scale. This new format could enhance Iraqi football’s global visibility, fostering further development within the sport.
Fans and officials are optimistic that Iraq can harness the determination and skill demonstrated in their matches against the UAE. Their strong performance in the fifth round of the Asian qualifiers showcases the team’s readiness for high-stakes competition.
Arnold concluded, “We are determined, positive, and prepared to face anyone in our path. Our objective is to excel, honor Iraqi football, and secure a place in the World Cup. Every detail matters, and we are fully preparing for this opportunity.”
Armed with strategic planning, experienced coaching, and motivated players, Iraq aims to make a significant effort to return to the World Cup stage and compete among the elite footballing nations in 2026.
