Tensions across the Middle East intensified after a fresh wave of Iranian missile and drone strikes targeted several Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Loud explosions were reported overnight in cities such as Dubai and Doha as air defence systems intercepted incoming threats. The attacks come amid the ongoing regional conflict triggered by joint US-Israeli military operations against Iran that began on February 28.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates confirmed that several missiles and drones were intercepted by defence systems, although debris from intercepted projectiles reportedly caused damage in parts of the country. Witnesses reported explosions near key infrastructure, including areas close to diplomatic and commercial facilities in Dubai. Security forces remained on high alert while emergency services responded to scattered damage caused by falling debris.
The escalating conflict has significantly disrupted regional aviation. Flights connecting major Gulf hubs — including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Kuwait City and Doha — to several international destinations, including India, were cancelled or delayed as airlines responded to airspace restrictions and security concerns. Aviation authorities urged travellers to monitor airline advisories while carriers such as Etihad Airways announced plans to gradually resume limited operations.
Regional military activity also intensified after Qatari fighter jets reportedly intercepted Iranian aircraft approaching a US military installation in Qatar. At the same time, Iranian forces launched additional strikes targeting US and Israeli interests across the region, while several Gulf states activated air defence systems to counter the threats.
The United States said it had evacuated more than 17,500 American citizens from parts of the Middle East since the conflict escalated. Meanwhile, global energy markets have reacted sharply after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared the strategic Strait of Hormuz closed, raising fears of disruption to oil shipments through one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
Diplomatic tensions remain high as international leaders call for restraint to prevent the conflict from expanding further across the Gulf region.
