Indonesia’s Energy Ministry has clarified that its $15 billion energy trade agreement with the United States will not alter the country’s commitment to energy independence. The deal, which includes imports of liquefied petroleum gas, crude oil, and refined gasoline, is primarily aimed at balancing bilateral tariffs rather than changing domestic energy strategies.
Energy Ministry Spokesperson Dwi Anggia emphasized that while Indonesia will purchase fuel from the US under the agreement, the country’s policies to reduce reliance on certain imports, such as diesel, remain unchanged. The ministry stressed that trade agreements and energy self-sufficiency are separate matters.
The pact also includes cooperation on critical minerals, focusing on investment and supply chain development. However, there are no obligations for raw material exports or fixed transaction values under this component, with further discussions still ongoing.
Regarding renewable energy commodities like bioethanol, Anggia said no final decisions have been made on trade schemes or supply commitments, as negotiations are still in progress. The government will provide full details once inter-ministerial coordination and further discussions are completed.
Overall, officials maintain that the agreement is commercial in nature and does not automatically impact Indonesia’s domestic energy mix, subsidies, or long-term strategic plans.
