India dominated the second and final Test against the West Indies on Saturday, posting a massive first-innings total of 518-5 before declaring and then reducing the visitors to 26-1 by tea, putting themselves firmly in control of the match.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal narrowly missed a double century, finishing on 175, while India captain Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 129, guiding India to a commanding position and keeping hopes alive for a 2-0 series sweep.
West Indies’ reply began shakily as opener John Campbell was dismissed for 10 in unusual fashion. B Sai Sudharsan took a spectacular reflex catch at forward short leg, catching the ball off Campbell’s aggressive sweep shot, which had first struck the grill of Sudharsan’s helmet before landing safely in his hands. At tea, Tagenarine Chanderpaul was on 13 and Alick Athanaze on 2, with the visitors still trailing India by 492 runs.
Earlier, India resumed the day on 318-2, but the crowd at Arun Jaitley Stadium saw Jaiswal add only two more runs before being run out following a mix-up with Gill. Nitish Kumar Reddy, promoted to number five, scored a quick 44, while wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel contributed 43, helping India cross the 500-run mark.
Gill reached his 10th Test century and fifth of the year before India declared their innings shortly after Jurel was clean bowled by West Indies captain Roston Chase. With a huge lead and early wickets in hand, India is now in a commanding position to seal the series.
