Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer Set for Return, Confirms Morkel

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer Set for Return, Confirms Morkel

Post by : Maya Rahman

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are on the mend, bringing good news for India as they prepare for their upcoming ODI series. Bowling coach Morne Morkel has stated that both athletes are showing positive signs in their recovery journey, with the final medical updates anticipated shortly.

Gill has been sidelined for two weeks due to a neck injury incurred during the Kolkata Test, but Morkel reported feeling optimistic after a recent conversation with him. Meanwhile, Iyer, recovering from a spleen injury sustained during the Australia series, is also gradually getting back into training. Morkel believes it’s promising that both players are working towards a return to the team.

In Gill's absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to claim his ODI position. A more pressing concern lies in filling Iyer's essential No. 4 slot, with candidates such as Rishabh Pant and Tilak Varma, each contributing distinct advantages. The final selection will hinge on their form, physical condition, and strategic considerations for the series.

Entering this ODI series, India faces significant pressure, having registered losses in five of their last seven home Test matches, a rare occurrence for the squad. Morkel observed that the players have had sufficient time to reflect on past shortcomings and are poised to realign their mental approach. He added that shifting from red-ball to white-ball cricket typically revitalizes team spirit and motivation.

Morkel also noted the momentum favoring South Africa, urging India to start off on the right foot. He cautioned that a confident South African team can pose substantial challenges, emphasizing the need for India to maintain focus and discipline right from the outset of the series. With seasoned players returning to the roster, he is hopeful about the team's turnaround.

Veteran players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are gearing up for their first matches at home since retiring from Test cricket earlier this year. Both are reportedly targeting the 2027 ODI World Cup, an ambition Morkel wholeheartedly supports. Drawing from his own experience bowling to them, he acknowledges their immense skill and believes there’s still plenty of cricket in them.

During recent training, India practiced on two covered pitches, one designated for match day. Morkel remarked that the wicket appeared lively, providing excellent pace and bounce, presenting a South African-like quality that could impact team selection for the first ODI.

A key discussion point remains whether to opt for fast-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy or spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar. Morkel noted that the final decision will be predicated on ground conditions and consultations within the coaching team. He mentioned that while the surface looks promising, a more thorough assessment post-training will dictate the ultimate choice.

As preparations for the series intensify, the anticipated return of crucial players like Gill and Iyer, alongside the expertise of Rohit and Kohli, positions India to reclaim its confidence and seek strong outcomes in the coming matches.
