Fans at the Gabba faced disappointment as India’s final T20 match against Australia was abandoned due to relentless rain. Despite this, India triumphed in the series 3-1, showcasing their strong performance ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
India’s openers, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, got off to a rapid start, scoring 52 runs without loss in under five overs before rain interrupted the game. Gill was assertive, hitting six boundaries to finish 29 not out, while Abhishek remained steady at 23, despite two dropped catches from Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis.
As the sellout crowd waited in vain, the storm continued, ultimately leading to the match’s cancellation over two hours later.
The series began with a rain-out in Canberra, but Australia bounced back to secure a four-wicket win in Melbourne, led by paceman Josh Hazlewood. With Hazlewood and other Ashes players being rested, India fought back valiantly, winning the third T20 in Hobart by five wickets and the fourth match on the Gold Coast by 48 runs.
Abhishek Sharma was named Player of the Series for his impressive 163 runs at an average of 40.75. Captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the team’s resilience, stating, “Everyone contributed, and coming back from one down shows our strong character. It was a team effort.”
Mitch Marsh, the Australian skipper, acknowledged the competitive nature of the series, remarking, “It was an exciting matchup — both teams put up a strong fight. India won the crucial games, so hats off to them.”
The series victory boosts India’s confidence as the reigning world champions prepare for their T20 World Cup defense on home soil next year.
