Historic Win: India Secures First Blind Women’s T20 World Cup by Defeating Nepal

Post by : Rameen Ariff

On November 23, 2025, India’s blind women’s cricket team etched their name in history by clinching the first-ever Blind Women’s Twenty20 World Cup at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The final saw them triumph over Nepal by seven wickets, marking a significant achievement in the tournament's legacy.

Winning the toss, India opted to field. Nepal managed to post a total of 114 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. In reply, India comfortably chased the target, finishing at 117 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in just 12 overs, exhibiting their impressive skill and determination throughout the competition.

Phula Saren emerged as India’s star performer, scoring 44 runs off 27 balls, playing a pivotal role in the victory. On the other hand, Sarita Ghimire contributed 35 runs from 38 balls, showcasing good effort for Nepal.

Co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India, the tournament featured teams from Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United States, Nepal, and India. The choice of Sri Lanka’s oldest Test cricket venue for the final added a historic significance to the event.

Blind cricket, tailored for players with visual impairments, utilizes a white plastic ball filled with ball bearings, producing a rattle sound for easier location. Special rules are designed to accommodate varying vision levels, with players donning blindfolds and fielders using clapping as a way of communication.

Teams comprise 11 players, with a minimum of four players classified as completely blind (B1). Runs scored by B1 athletes count as double to promote their inclusion, while those with partial sight are assigned as B2 or B3 based on their vision capabilities.

India's monumental win not only reflects the team's tenacity and dedication but also stands as an inspiration for many aspiring athletes with disabilities to engage in the sport and showcase their abilities on an international stage.
