Huma Qureshi opened up about her challenges entering Bollywood, revealing her parents' initial shock when she got her first film offer. They feared it was part of a “prostitution racket.”
‘They were doubtful,’ Huma recalls
Huma reflected on her parents’ disbelief when she informed them about the casting offer. “My parents couldn’t fathom it. They questioned why someone would want to cast me. It was such an outrageous notion for them. They genuinely believed it was a prostitution racket,” she explained.
Convincing them to allow her to pursue acting was tough. “Looking back, it’s clear they had little faith in my judgment. It took significant persuasion, especially since my parents come from a different background. To this day, their grasp of the industry is limited,” she added.
The unrealized film project
Despite their doubts, Huma took the plunge. She met with filmmakers, examined the script, and even auditioned. Regrettably, the film never came to fruition. “It was disheartening that the project didn’t materialize,” she lamented.
Crowning success with Gangs of Wasseypur
Prior to her Bollywood journey, Huma had featured in various short films and ads. Her major breakthrough was with Anurag Kashyap’s celebrated crime film, Gangs of Wasseypur: Part 2 (2012), which brought her widespread acclaim.
Diverse roles and latest projects
Throughout her career, Huma has taken on numerous roles across different genres—from Ek Thi Daayan and Badlapur to Jolly LLB 2. While some films like Dedh Ishqiya and D-Day didn’t achieve box office success, Huma managed to leave her mark with impactful portrayals.
Recently, she was featured in Maharani Season 4, stepping back into her role as the astute politician Rani Bharti. She also played a cop in Bayan, which was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and starred in Jolly LLB 3. Next, Huma will portray the villain in Netflix’s Delhi Crime 3.
