Japanese football legend Keisuke Honda has voiced his optimism regarding the national team's prospects at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He believes they not only have the capability to reach the semifinal round but also to potentially clinch the championship title. Honda, who boasts an impressive 90 international caps and has participated in three World Cups, shared these insights during the AVCJ Private Equity Forum held in Hong Kong.
According to Honda, Japan’s roster is filled with exceptional talent, enabling them to compete against top-tier nations. He stated, “They can definitely challenge to be among the top four next year, maybe even become champions. There’s nothing beyond their grasp given the number of quality players on the team right now, and I truly hope they make it happen.”
Having already qualified for the 2026 World Cup set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, Japan made its mark at the last World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Their remarkable victories over powerhouse teams like Spain and Germany showcased their growing strength in international football.
At 39 years old, Honda is regarded as one of Japan's all-time football greats, having played for prestigious clubs, including AC Milan in Serie A. His international career spans three World Cups, where he played a pivotal role in elevating Japan's status in global football.
In addition to his sports achievements, Honda is a thriving entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He co-founded X&KSK, an investment firm focused on Japan, raising around 15.3 billion yen for its first fund this year. The firm aims to elevate startups across various sectors, including technology and biotech. Honda also set up Dreamers VC in the US with actor Will Smith.
Though he is now honing his business acumen, Honda remains committed to his football ambitions. He aspires to become one of the top football coaches globally and dreams of guiding Japan to a World Cup victory as a coach. He remarked, “My aspirations are twofold: to become the best investor and the best coach, ultimately aiming for World Cup success as a coach.”
Honda’s statements reflect his firm belief in the evolution of Japanese football and its potential to thrive in the global arena. He emphasized the significance of teamwork, player development, and effective leadership for the team's success. With a skilled crop of players and increasing experience in international matchups, Japan is poised to leave its mark at the 2026 tournament.
Football analysts and fans alike have responded positively to Honda’s hopeful outlook, noting Japan’s advancements over the past few World Cups as signs of steady growth. His possible future contribution as a coach could provide additional support to the team’s aspirations.
Honda’s perspective not only displays confidence in the current squad but also highlights his desire to make an impact in football as a player, coach, and mentor. His pursuit of excellence in both football and business illustrates his unwavering commitment to success on and off the pitch.
