The Gulf Giants initiated their ILT20 Season 4 journey with a flourish, decisively ending their six-match losing streak by securing a six-wicket victory over MI Emirates at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday night. A mix of incisive bowling and aggressive batting set the stage for a game dominated by the Giants.
After being invited to bat first, MI Emirates faced early troubles as the Giants’ bowling attack dismantled the top order. Nuwan Thushara made crucial inroads during the powerplay, claiming the wickets of Mohammed Waseem and Jonny Bairstow with sharp caught-and-bowled dismissals. Azmatullah Omarzai further exacerbated the situation by eliminating Tom Banton, leaving the Emirates reeling at 36/3.
Nicholas Pooran and Tajinder Singh attempted to stabilize the innings, yet scoring remained sluggish as the Giants took control. By the halfway mark, MI Emirates desperately sought momentum with a score of 58/4. Kieron Pollard ignited a late surge with three successive sixes in the 13th over, and Pooran's quick runs helped the team reach a respectable total. However, both fell in the later overs. A final effort from Romario Shepherd and Rashid Khan pushed the total to 163/6.
In pursuit of 164 runs, the Giants stumbled at the outset. Chris Woakes struck twice, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Gerhard Erasmus cheaply. Nevertheless, Pathum Nissanka and Moeen Ali mounted a steady recovery, restoring equilibrium to the innings with measured striking.
Once settled, Nissanka accelerated dramatically, reaching fifty in just 30 balls through a combination of sharp boundaries and clean hitting. Following Moeen Ali's run-out at 67, the Giants momentarily hesitated until Omarzai took charge.
Omarzai turned the match significantly, unleashing a blistering attack, highlighted by a 23-run over against Rashid Khan, which featured three towering sixes. His unbeaten 39 off just 16 balls ensured the chase would be straightforward. Nissanka continued to add pressure with additional boundaries against Woakes before being dismissed for an impressive 81 off 42 balls.
Completing the chase seamlessly, the Giants reached the target in just 14.4 overs — a powerful statement to launch their season.
This victory, fueled by disciplined bowling and fearless batting, signals a strong revival for the Gulf Giants as they aim for a successful run in ILT20 Season 4.
