Google and Epic Games have reached a settlement in U.S. court to resolve their long-running antitrust dispute over how Android distributes apps and handles in-app purchases. Epic first sued in 2020, alleging Google exercised monopolistic control over app access and payment flows on Android devices.
The proposed deal would introduce notable changes to Google’s Play Store policies designed to lower fees, offer developers more options, and give users greater choice. Among the measures are provisions that would let consumers install third-party app stores that meet new security requirements. Developers would also be allowed to direct users to alternative payment methods both inside apps and through external web links, with such transactions subject to a capped service fee of either 9% or 20%.
The litigation has featured several high-profile moments: Epic prevailed in a 2023 jury trial and U.S. District Judge James Donato later issued a broad injunction. Google argued some mandated remedies risked user safety and competitive balance, and sought relief in higher courts. The U.S. Supreme Court recently declined Google’s request to pause parts of the injunction, keeping the dispute in the public eye.
Observers say the settlement could shift the dynamics of the Android ecosystem by increasing developer flexibility while retaining security safeguards for users. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney hailed the agreement as a win for Android’s openness. Google, while denying any unlawful conduct, characterized the settlement as a measured path forward.
Formal approval from Judge Donato is required before the deal can take effect; a hearing to review the proposal is expected soon.
