Virginia reached a symbolic milestone as Ghazala Hashmi was sworn in as the state’s lieutenant governor, the first Muslim and South Asian American to hold the position. Her victory is seen as a sign of broader representation in U.S. public life.
Hashmi was born in India and moved to the United States at age four in 1968. Despite growing up in America, she has kept a strong personal bond with her birthplace, Hyderabad. During a visit about a decade ago she explored the city’s historic sites, including the Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace and the Salar Jung Museum.
Her cousin Rasia described the trip as emotional, saying Hashmi felt a deep connection to both paternal and maternal relatives in the city. Accompanied by her elder daughter, she joined family events and reconnected with her roots.
The local cuisine also left an impression: Rasia noted that the spicy flavours of Hyderabadi dishes were a memorable part of the visit. That cultural affinity resonates with many in the Indian diaspora.
As lieutenant governor, Hashmi is expected to champion inclusive policies and work across communities to address Virginia’s needs. Her path from Hyderabad to American state leadership highlights both determination and the role of heritage in public life.
Her election is being celebrated by Indian Americans and Hyderabadis alike, who view her rise as a source of pride and anticipate the contributions she will bring to the state.
