In a nail-biting encounter on Friday night, the Boston Bruins edged the Los Angeles Kings with a 2-1 overtime victory, largely due to a stellar performance from Morgan Geekie. Geekie netted both goals for the Bruins, securing the game-winner just 2:27 into overtime, providing a crucial lift after a rough patch with three losses in four matches.
The overtime sequence was ignited by David Pastrnak’s play near the blue line, who delivered a precise pass to Geekie. The forward quickly unleashed a powerful shot from the right circle that beat Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper, marking Geekie’s second two-goal game in a row and placing him at the top of the league charts with 16 goals, tied with Nathan MacKinnon of Colorado.
Defenseman Nikita Zadorov also made a mark, assisting on both goals, while goalie Jeremy Swayman emerged as a key player, stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced and keeping Boston engaged throughout the game, particularly during intense moments as the Kings pushed for dominance.
The game saw the Kings equalize late in the third, thanks to Joel Armia’s short-handed goal with 6:57 left on the clock, his third such goal this season, which propelled him to lead the league in this category. After Swayman made an initial save during a fast break, Armia managed to push the rebound across the line, leveling the score at 1-1.
For most of the match, both teams struggled to find the back of the net. The Bruins weathered a challenging 5-on-3 situation during the first period, during which Swayman made an impressive glove save against a wrist shot from Adrian Kempe, maintaining the shutout.
Los Angeles nearly gained the lead early in the second when Kevin Fiala hit the post during a power play, with the puck ricocheting off Swayman’s back before Boston quickly cleared it off the line. The two teams experienced near misses throughout, including the Bruins hitting the post twice late in the second period.
As the third period unfolded, Boston finally broke the deadlock at 8:01 when Alex Steeves delivered a perfect pass, allowing Geekie to unleash a stunning shot into the top corner.
The Kings rapidly responded, as Armia scored his short-handed goal at 13:03, securing a 1-1 tie heading into overtime.
Los Angeles concluded the match with a 32-26 shot advantage, yet was unsuccessful on five power play opportunities, a significant factor in their defeat. They have now dropped three consecutive games, struggling to find success on home ice.
In contrast, the Bruins left the ice filled with energy, rejuvenated by Geekie’s brilliance and Swayman’s formidable defense as they aim to carry this momentum into the future.
With this victory, Boston aims to build on their success, while the Kings must reassess and enhance their offensive efforts going forward.
