Gaza’s Displaced Families Face Dire Conditions as Heavy Rains Flood Tents

Gaza’s Displaced Families Face Dire Conditions as Heavy Rains Flood Tents

Post by : Rameen Ariff

On Tuesday, heavy rainfall compounded the suffering in Gaza, inundating makeshift tents where thousands of displaced Palestinians seek refuge. Winter's arrival is leaving families, uprooted by two years of conflict, vulnerable to frigid temperatures without adequate shelter.

Around two million people in Gaza have been displaced following the prolonged conflict triggered by the October 2023 Hamas attack. A ceasefire has been in place since mid-October, yet the destruction of vital infrastructure makes life exceedingly challenging. Families find themselves living in dilapidated tents that have largely failed to shield against severe weather.

Residents recounted how torrents transformed their camps into swamps. Um Ahmed Aowdah, standing in front of her flooded tent, conveyed the heartbreak of her situation. She noted that for two years, she and her family have awaited new tents or tarps, leaving them vulnerable to any rain, let alone the fierce winter storms.

Humanitarian organizations are raising alarms about an escalating crisis. The Palestinian NGOs Network reports that approximately 300,000 new tents are urgently needed for roughly 1.5 million people still displaced in Gaza. The Civil Defence Service indicates that recent storms have already damaged or flooded thousands of tents.

In certain regions, floodwaters swelled up to half a meter, obliterating tents and even disrupting a field hospital's operations. Medical teams and local volunteers have been tirelessly working to assist families in salvaging their remaining possessions.

The United Nations is actively working to deliver winter supplies to Gaza, but the flow of aid trucks remains limited. Gaza authorities accuse Israel of hindering the essential aid promised in the ceasefire agreement, while aid organizations assert that many critical items are stuck at entry points. Israel refutes claims of obstruction, demanding that aid groups enhance distribution and safeguard against theft. Hamas has denied allegations of misappropriating supplies.

As winter starts, families are apprehensive about the forthcoming weeks, fearing that they may endure even greater hardships while they await adequate shelter, heating resources, and essential supplies.
