France has announced a new voluntary youth military service set to begin by mid-2026, aiming to prepare the nation for rising global threats. President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement on Thursday during a speech at the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade in Varces, located in the French Alps.
The program is part of France’s broader effort to strengthen national defense amid growing concerns over shifting U.S. security commitments and Russia’s increasingly aggressive posture in Europe. Macron emphasized that France “cannot remain idle” and must take proactive steps to safeguard its security.
The voluntary military service will target 18- and 19-year-olds, who will receive payment for their participation. The program is planned to last 10 months and will be financed with a budget of 2 billion euros ($2.32 billion), which Macron described as “a significant and necessary effort.”
According to Macron, the initiative draws inspiration from similar programs in other European countries, where governments are taking steps to prepare young citizens for national defense in response to modern security challenges.
The new youth service is designed to provide training, discipline, and national awareness, while also fostering a sense of civic responsibility among participants. Macron indicated that the scheme will help France build resilience in an era of accelerating global threats, while ensuring that young citizens are equipped to contribute to the country’s defense.
This move reflects a broader trend in Europe, as countries rethink traditional security approaches in light of global uncertainties and evolving geopolitical tensions. France’s initiative is expected to complement existing military structures and strengthen the nation’s readiness for any potential crisis.
