France is preparing to launch a new voluntary military service program aimed at strengthening its defense capabilities and ensuring the armed forces remain “ready and respected,” according to President Emmanuel Macron. The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns in Europe following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has prompted several European Union nations to increase defense spending and develop new recruitment strategies.
The French program will offer a 10-month voluntary service exclusively within the country, initially enrolling 3,000 young citizens starting next summer. Officials expect the initiative to gradually expand, reaching 50,000 participants by 2035. Macron emphasized the importance of encouraging young people to join the military to maintain a capable and credible national defense.
France, which ended mandatory military conscription in 2001, currently maintains a professional military force of approximately 205,000 personnel. Alongside the new voluntary program, the government plans to more than double the number of reservists to 105,000 over the next decade to further enhance national security.
General Fabien Mandon, chief of the French defense staff, highlighted the need for the army to remain vigilant and prepared for potential threats from Russia in the coming three to four years. In recent months, Mandon sparked debate by suggesting that France must be ready to make significant sacrifices, including potential loss of life and economic challenges, to defend against future aggression.
The move positions France alongside other EU nations that have introduced innovative military service programs. Germany, for instance, has pledged to build Europe’s strongest conventional army, reflecting a broader European effort to bolster defense readiness.
By implementing this voluntary military service, France aims not only to strengthen its armed forces but also to cultivate a new generation of young citizens committed to national defense, ensuring that the country is prepared for emerging global threats while fostering respect and trust in its military institutions.
This initiative marks a significant step in France’s strategy to secure its borders and maintain a strong, capable military presence amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in Europe.
