On Monday evening, numerous dead fish were spotted drifting in Al Muzoon Canal, leading the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi to take swift action. The agency disclosed that a harmful algal bloom had emerged, drastically reducing dissolved oxygen levels and posing a lethal threat to aquatic life.
Initial insights shared via the agency's social media indicated that the bloom likely resulted from heightened nutrient concentrations coupled with stagnant water circulation in the canal. These factors promote rapid algal growth, which can sometimes become toxic and disrupt the water's natural ecosystem.
Overnight efforts were initiated to clear the waterway of dead fish and initiate proper disposal methods. Authorities are also gathering water and fish samples for analysis to understand the extent and dynamics of the algal bloom. Continuous monitoring is being conducted to observe any changes in the canal's environmental conditions.
While investigations into the causes are ongoing, officials confirm that a comprehensive technical assessment is underway. Further updates will be released once the findings are finalized. Residents are urged to report similar occurrences to facilitate prompt responses from authorities throughout the emirate.
