Rome, Italy – A major fire has swept through the historic Bernaga Monastery in La Valletta Brianza, near Milan, leaving extensive damage and threatening priceless artworks, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The blaze, which broke out on Saturday, forced the safe evacuation of 22 cloistered nuns, none of whom were injured.
Founded in 1628, the Bernaga Monastery holds deep historical and religious significance. It was the site where Carlo Acutis, the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint, received his First Communion—a key sacrament in the Catholic faith. Acutis was recently elevated to sainthood on September 7, 2025, by Pope Leo XIV.
According to the Italian fire service, the fire engulfed large parts of the monastery. Nighttime images shared by the firefighters showed intense flames consuming the structure. Marco Panzeri, mayor of La Valletta Brianza, described the situation as “a disaster, an immense, incalculable damage.”
While the nuns were evacuated safely, many historic artworks and sacred artefacts are believed to have been destroyed. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which may have been due to a short circuit, though no confirmation has been made.
The Bernaga Monastery, with nearly 400 years of history, was not only a religious landmark but also a cultural treasure in northern Italy. The incident has shocked both the local community and the global Catholic faithful who revere the site for its connection to Saint Carlo Acutis.
The fire has prompted emergency and heritage preservation teams to assess the damage and salvage whatever is possible from the historic monastery. Officials emphasize the need to preserve the memory and legacy of this historic religious site.
