Finnair Suspends Flights Due to Replacement of 1,700 A321 Seat Covers

The Helsinki-based airline, Finnair, has temporarily grounded eight of its A321 aircraft to replace approximately 1,700 seat covers, leading to the cancellation of nearly 70 flights since October 13. This disruption affects around 11,000 passengers. Finnair emphasized that this precautionary measure was taken due to concerns that the fire protection of the seat covers had not been adequately verified after cleaning. Replacement covers are being procured from various suppliers to uphold safety standards.

This operational halt has placed many travelers in a state of uncertainty, prompting apologies from Finnair for the inconvenience caused. The airline reassured customers that safety and the efficient operation of flights are its primary concerns. Pekka Korhonen, SVP Technical Operations at Finnair, confirmed that the airline is focused on resolving these issues swiftly while aiming to reduce passenger disruptions. Although Finnair has leased two additional aircraft for some operational support, flight cancellations may persist until the complete A321 fleet is operational again.

Finnair noted that the seat cover swap was triggered after safety inspections indicated that the cleaning process might have impaired their fire protection attributes. The airline is undertaking extensive measures to ensure that all 1,700 seat covers across the eight A321 aircraft are replaced. Passengers impacted will receive notifications regarding their flight updates and rebooking choices. This decisive action showcases Finnair’s commitment to safety and dependability, even though it causes temporary interruptions in service.

Established in 1923, originally as Aero, Finnair has consistently connected Europe, North America, and Asia throughout its history. Its first aircraft, the German Junkers F 13 seaplane, was unique for alternating between skis in winter and floats in summer. Today, Finnair continues its tradition of prioritizing safety and service, particularly reflected in its ongoing seat cover replacement initiative across its fleet.

With expectations to have the full A321 fleet operational by month-end, Finnair is diligently working to lessen the impact of flight cancellations while bolstering passenger assurance. The airline’s unwavering commitment to operational safety, including comprehensive checks of seat cover fire safety, highlights its dedication to rigorous maintenance practices.
