Gaza health officials said 15 Palestinian bodies arrived from Israel, bringing the number of remains returned since the ceasefire began to 285. The latest transfer follows the handover of the remains of an Israeli soldier captured during the October 7, 2023 attack that ignited the conflict.
Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, Hamas has handed over the remains of 21 Israeli hostages to Israel. In response, Israel has released groups of 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli recovered. Officials warn that identification is difficult because of a shortage of DNA testing kits and widespread destruction across Gaza.
Hospital authorities in Khan Younis said the process is complicated further by fragile humanitarian conditions and urgent reconstruction needs in the territory. Only a portion of the returned bodies have been positively identified; authorities have posted photographs to help families recognize missing relatives.
The gradual exchange of remains highlights the fragile efforts to sustain the ceasefire while addressing the aftermath of the deadliest and most destructive recent fighting in Gaza. Both sides continue to confront complex logistical and humanitarian challenges as the region seeks stability and closure for affected families.
