FIFA Sanctions El Salvador Football Federation Over Racist Fans

FIFA Sanctions El Salvador Football Federation Over Racist Fans

Post by : Rameen Ariff

FIFA has sanctioned the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) following incidents of racist and discriminatory behaviour by fans during the CONCACAF World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Suriname. The disciplinary action highlights FIFA’s continued commitment to combating racism and promoting equality in football.

FESFUT confirmed on Monday that the world football governing body has imposed a fine of $62,715, which must be invested in a previously approved comprehensive anti-discrimination program. Additionally, the next official match of the Salvadoran national team will be required to have at least 15 per cent of stadium capacity closed, specifically in the stands behind the goals, as a precautionary measure.

The controversial match took place on September 8 at the Cuscatlan Stadium, where fans allegedly directed racist chants and discriminatory gestures at Surinamese players. In a statement, FESFUT condemned such behaviour and emphasized its commitment to working with FIFA, CONCACAF, and other international bodies to ensure that football in El Salvador is played in an environment of respect, equality, and unity.

Currently, La Selecta, coached by Colombian Hernan “Bolillo” Gomez, sits second in Group A of the qualifiers with three points, just behind Suriname, which leads the group with four points. Panama holds third place with two points, while Guatemala has one point.

Looking ahead, El Salvador is scheduled to host Panama on October 10, followed by a match against Guatemala on October 14. The federation hopes that the sanctions will serve as a reminder to fans about maintaining sportsmanship and eliminating racism in football.
