Rajamouli's Varanasi Poster Sparks Discussion Over Missing Actor Names

Rajamouli's Varanasi Poster Sparks Discussion Over Missing Actor Names

Post by : Meena Ariff

During a spectacular unveiling at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, SS Rajamouli’s highly anticipated film Varanasi was announced, with notable attendees like Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran present. The buzz surrounding the event was amplified by a surprising revelation in the title poster—the absence of the actors' names.

The film’s three-minute title reveal culminates with “SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi,” highlighting writer V. Vijayendra Prasad, music composer MM Keeravani, and essential crew members. Notably, the three leading actors’ names were conspicuously absent from the promotional material.

This omission has generated considerable interest on social media, prompting questions from fans about the absence of the performers' identities. Many followers quickly pointed out that this is a stylistic choice made by Rajamouli, reminiscent of his previous work on Baahubali. He focuses on immersing audiences in the film's universe, prioritizing characters and narratives over celebrity clout. Actor names typically appear only in the concluding credits.

Moreover, fans noted that Rajamouli himself has become the strongest global identity linked to the project, with audiences recognizing his films more through his reputation than the cast. His unique storytelling vision has evolved into the film's main draw, even eclipsing renowned stars.

The title reveal also provided an initial look at the film's characters.

  • Mahesh Babu takes on the role of Rudhra, depicted riding a bull in the streets of Varanasi.

  • Priyanka Chopra stars as Mandakini, a captivating, gun-wielding character donned in a saree.

  • Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Kumbha, the film's antagonist, who is introduced sitting in a wheelchair.

Remaining details about the characters are scarce, fueling excitement around the film’s expansive, multi-epoch narrative that is said to traverse various locations and time periods. Currently in production, Varanasi is set for a global release on Sankranthi 2027.
