Pakistani security forces intercepted and destroyed two explosive-laden drones over Islamabad late Friday, raising fresh security concerns in the region amid tensions with neighbouring Afghanistan.
According to media reports citing security sources, one drone crashed near the Faizabad interchange while another fell in the I-9 industrial sector of the Pakistani capital after being targeted by security systems. Authorities said both drones were carrying explosives.
Officials stated that investigations are underway to determine who launched the drones and from where they originated. The incident occurred just days after a warning from Mullah Yaqoob, who reportedly said Afghanistan could target Islamabad if tensions between the two countries continued to escalate.
Earlier the same day, security forces also intercepted a drone over Kohat, a garrison town in Pakistan’s north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Following the incident, the Pakistan Airports Authority said there was a brief operational adjustment in flight operations at Islamabad International Airport. However, authorities later clarified that the airport was not shut down and flights continued to operate normally.
Officials urged the public not to rely on unverified reports circulating online and advised citizens to follow official updates for accurate information. Security agencies have increased surveillance in and around the capital as investigations into the drone incident continue.
