Explosion During Friday Prayers Injures 55 in Jakarta Mosque

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Jakarta, Indonesia – Authorities reported that over 55 individuals were hospitalized due to explosions at a mosque located within a school complex in Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, during Friday prayers. The blasts triggered panic among congregants, resulting in a range of injuries from minor burns to severe trauma.

Eyewitnesses recounted turbulent scenes as several explosions erupted almost simultaneously. Luciana, 43, who was working at the school canteen, described the harrowing experience: “The sound of the explosion was deafening, leaving me breathless from shock. Initially, we thought it might be a short circuit or an issue with the sound system, but the overwhelming fear made everyone flee the scene.”

Officials have apprehended a 17-year-old male, suspected of being behind the incident. Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed that the suspect is currently undergoing surgery, while the motive remains undisclosed.

Jakarta's police chief, Asep Edi Suheri, announced that a comprehensive investigation is underway. “We have enacted several measures, including securing the crime scene, establishing police perimeters, and sanitizing the area,” he indicated. Security forces have cordoned off the site, deploying armed police units, emergency vehicles, and armored personnel to ensure safety.

The exterior of the green-painted mosque appeared undamaged. Security officials noted that two explosions were recorded. This school complex is situated on land owned by the navy in North Jakarta, an area populated by military personnel and retired officers.

While Indonesia has faced attacks on churches and Western entities in the past, mosque incidents are exceptionally rare. Efforts have been largely effective against Islamist militancy in recent years, making this event particularly concerning.

Investigations continue as authorities work to ascertain the full scope of the incident, the suspect's motives, and any potential accomplices involved.
