Dubai rolled out the red carpet for international museum professionals at the 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025). Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this was the inaugural occasion for the global conference to take place in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Beyond the primary sessions, delegates engaged in carefully planned excursions intended to showcase the UAE’s multifaceted heritage and its evolving status as a cultural epicenter.
The Local Social Programme presented an array of immersive day trips across all seven emirates. Each excursion was meticulously curated to capture the essence and identity of the hosting emirate, offering a harmonious exploration of heritage, innovation, nature, and modern creativity. Delegates experienced traditional markets, ecological wonders, contemporary museums, and archaeological sites that brilliantly depict the country’s transformation from ancient traditions to futuristic endeavors.
Notable destinations included Al Ain's Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort, as well as Sharjah's Mleiha Archaeological Centre and Heritage Museum. In Abu Dhabi, highlights featured the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan. Visitors to Ras Al Khaimah explored Dhayah Fort and the National Museum. In Dubai, the Museum of the Future, Etihad Museum, and Al Shindagha Museum offered a blend of history and modernity. Ajman Museum and archaeological sites in Umm Al Quwain rounded out the enriching programme.
While the local tours took participants deep into the UAE’s offerings, the Regional Excursions Programme provided an expansive view of the Middle Eastern cultural landscape. Extended trips to Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan introduced delegates to neighboring museum initiatives, fostering a deeper understanding of shared heritage and the ongoing narratives that mold cultural identities.
These combined experiences not only showcased the UAE’s cultural gems but also highlighted how museums across the region dedicate themselves to preserving stories, traditions, and knowledge. The tours reaffirmed ICOM’s fundamental mission—unifying cultures through exchange, education, and meaningful discoveries.
