Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is back in action at its Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi, having restarted production following a halt triggered by Iranian drone attacks aimed at Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi in March.
The emergency shut-down occurred after the attack inflicted considerable damage and left various EGA personnel injured. Since that incident, efforts have been underway to safely bring the facility back online.
The company announced plans to ramp up the refinery's output to 50 percent of its full capacity in just a few days. EGA is targeting complete restoration of alumina production by the end of 2026.
This restart is a crucial milestone in returning operations to normalcy after the disruptions caused by the unfortunate March events.
“Our team at Al Taweelah alumina refinery has shown incredible commitment and adaptability, allowing us to achieve this significant milestone quickly and safely,” stated Abdulnasser bin Kalban, EGA's Chief Executive Officer.
The company's employees have been key in this recovery phase, focusing on maintaining safety throughout the process.
EGA has reiterated that the rising aluminium production at the Al Taweelah smelter will continue unaffected by the refinery's output capacity.
Located side by side, the alumina refinery and aluminium smelter are interconnected, with alumina—the primary input for aluminium production—transported via a conveyor belt system.
The Al Taweelah alumina refinery commenced operations in 2019 and produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina in 2025, meeting 46 percent of EGA’s alumina needs.
EGA is optimistic about the refinery’s gradual increase in output, aiming for full operational capability by the end of 2026.
