Abhimanyu Easwaran’s path in Indian cricket remains perplexing for fans. Despite being a standout performer in domestic red-ball competitions for years, he has yet to secure a Test debut. His persistent inclusion in India’s squad hasn't led to a place in the playing XI, with selectors consistently opting for other players.
At 30, Easwaran holds an impressive first-class record—8,136 runs in 109 matches, averaging 47.85—statistics that typically warrant a longer stay in the Test team. However, his limited presence in the IPL and the white-ball format has led many to question his suitability for the current trend that favors multi-format players.
This narrative might be evolving. In a recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Punjab, Easwaran delivered a remarkable 130 off just 66 balls, signaling his intent to bolster his white-ball capabilities. Although Bengal lost the match, his performance attracted significant attention.
Ravichandran Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, could not help but make a humorous jab at chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Commenting on Easwaran’s T20 century, Ashwin remarked:
“Now with Abhimanyu scoring a century in T20, he’ll definitely make an appearance. Since he's excelled in T20, surely he'll be part of the Test squad now.”
This outburst encapsulates the frustration shared by former players and fans who see Easwaran as deserving of an opportunity following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Tests. Instead, younger players like Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair were chosen, who have yet to make a significant impact against England.
Easwaran has faced criticism for not asserting his dominance in India A matches—often regarded as auditions for national selection. Earlier this year, he expressed the emotional weight of waiting for a chance.
“Yes, it does hurt sometimes. You work hard, prepare well, and the dream is always to be in the middle contributing to the team,” he shared with Revsportz in October. “I am grateful for my supportive family, friends, and coaches who keep me grounded. Currently, I’m optimistic and eager for the Ranji season.”
As his performances across formats begin to gain recognition and senior positions become available, Easwaran’s perseverance might soon pay off. For now, his tale is one of domestic brilliance awaiting its global stage.
