Dr. S. Jaishankar, India's External Affairs Minister, landed in the UAE on Saturday, marking an important visit as the first by an Indian official to the Gulf since the turmoil surrounding Iran began. The primary goal is to reinforce India’s energy security in light of escalating geopolitical issues.
Simultaneously, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri remains engaged in Qatar, working toward securing extra LNG supplies after recent production disruptions due to concerns around the Strait of Hormuz. Almost 4% of India’s LNG imports come from Qatar, highlighting its significance as an energy partner.
Earlier this week, during the Indian Ocean Conference held in Mauritius, Jaishankar emphasized India's commitment to finalizing a government-to-government arrangement for oil and gas supplies with Mauritius, further establishing India as a regional energy security provider while addressing its own supply needs.
The timing of Jaishankar’s visit is particularly crucial, given the diplomatic intricacies as India seeks to navigate relationships amid increasing instability in West Asia. He made it clear that India has no overarching agreement with Iran regarding safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns raised from recent incidents involving Indian energy shipments.
This trip aligns with ongoing diplomatic dialogues in the region, including the Iran-US conversations aimed at de-escalating tensions. It also highlights India's commitment to safeguarding its nationals and improving coordination with UAE authorities, especially following instances where numerous Indian citizens faced disruptions due to sudden flight cancellations during the conflict.
Jaishankar is slated to engage in talks with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other senior officials, with a focus on energy collaboration, regional security, and the welfare of the Indian community residing in the UAE.
His visit follows a series of high-profile exchanges between India and the UAE, showcasing the steadily strengthening diplomatic relationship that includes a recent short visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India.
