Famed television star Dipika Kakar, best known for her role in Sasural Simar Ka, has bravely shared her fight against liver cancer. In a heartfelt discussion during a recent episode of Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s popular podcast, she revealed personal insights into her diagnosis, treatment path, and the emotional impact of the illness on her and her family.
Confronting the Diagnosis with Determination
Dipika expressed her surprise at the diagnosis, which shocked both her and her healthcare providers. “Honestly, my surgeon, Dr. Somnath Chattopadhyay, and my family physician, Dr. Tushar Shah, were equally surprised. Despite their years of experience, they couldn’t explain how this happened to me,” she shared. Although some doctors suspected latent toxicity, the actual cause remained unclear. Dipika reflected, “I've never smoked and always tried to live a healthy lifestyle. I enjoy food but not to an extreme or unhealthy level.”
Initial Symptoms and Misunderstandings
Dipika detailed the early signals that hinted something was amiss. Initially suspecting gallbladder pain during her pregnancy with her son, Ruhaan, she noted that tests primarily focused on her baby, thus missing anomalies in her liver function.
After childbirth, the pain intensified sharply, affecting her abdomen significantly. “The pain grew unbearable, and I confided in my husband Shoaib that something truly was wrong,” she revealed. Doctors first treated the discomfort as acidity; however, a deeper investigation became necessary when the pain persisted.
Revelation of the Tumor
Subsequent tests, including a CT scan, unearthed gallbladder stones as well as a concerning 9-centimeter tumor on her liver. The initial treatment focused on managing symptoms, yet further evaluations confirmed the severity of her condition.
She emphasized the significant role of advanced imaging in her care: “In early November, I will undergo another FAPI scan, which, like a CT scan, specifically targets cancer cells in the body. It provides crucial insights into the cancer’s potential spread before surgeries or treatments commence.”
Treatment Progress and Outlook
Dipika successfully underwent surgery that removed about 22% of her liver along with the entire 11-centimeter tumor. Grateful that the cancer remained localized, she stated, “During my last FAPI scan, no cancer cells were detected anywhere else in my body.”
Currently, she is receiving oral targeted therapy, akin to chemotherapy, aimed at eliminating cancer cells and preventing any return. This regimen is planned to last two years, with regular monitoring showcasing positive results so far, including no cancer recurrence.
Continuing the Path of Hope
Dipika stressed the significance of vigilance in her recovery, mentioning, “My condition is closely monitored, and so far, all tests have returned normal. Periodic scans remain vital for comprehensive oversight.”
Despite facing numerous emotional and physical challenges, Dipika continues to maintain her resilience and hope, relying on her faith and family support throughout this journey. Her candidness about her health struggles has resonated with many fans, offering them inspiration during their own battles.
