The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) has marked a significant achievement in its international expansion by obtaining recognition from the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) as an approved foreign trading venue.
This recognition enables Swiss financial institutions regulated by FINMA to access the DFM trading platform directly. Additionally, it allows for the trading of equity securities issued by Swiss companies on the Dubai market, creating a regulated link between Dubai and Switzerland, both prominent global financial hubs, and enhancing cross-border investment opportunities.
The approval underscores the robustness of DFM’s regulatory framework, regulated by the UAE Capital Market Authority (CMA). It also illustrates the collaborative efforts between UAE and Swiss regulators, both of whom are participants in the IOSCO Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding concerning consultation, cooperation, and information exchange.
Currently, DFM caters to over 1.2 million investors across 212 nationalities, with foreign investors making up approximately 85% of all registered investors, showcasing the market's solid international standing. This new recognition is anticipated to bolster this diverse investor base by offering a regulated avenue for Swiss institutions to engage in Dubai's capital markets.
Hamed Ali, CEO of DFM and Nasdaq Dubai, hailed the recognition as a pivotal accomplishment in DFM's mission to enhance international market access and align with Dubai's vision of developing premier capital markets. He emphasized that the recognition paves the way for Swiss financial institutions to connect directly with DFM's ecosystem, creating fresh opportunities for trading Swiss-incorporated securities in Dubai.
H.E. Waleed Saeed Al Awadhi, CEO of the UAE Capital Market Authority, remarked that the recognition highlights the strong regulatory partnership between CMA and FINMA and signifies the strength of the UAE’s financial regulatory framework. According to him, this development establishes a transparent and trustworthy channel for cross-border market participation while bolstering the UAE’s standing as a reliable global financial hub.
This recognition aligns with DFM’s long-term objectives to attract more international investors and solidify Dubai's status as a vital link between regional and global capital markets. Furthermore, it complements Dubai’s overarching goals to expand its financial sector and enhance cross-border investment flow.
