New Delhi — Shockwaves reverberated globally after a car bomb detonated near Delhi’s Red Fort, claiming nine lives and injuring over 20 on Monday evening. This blast, which struck close to Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort metro station, has been categorized as a terrorist act by investigators.
The explosion set fire to multiple nearby vehicles, scattering debris, including shattered glass and twisted metal, across the area. Authorities wasted no time in launching an investigation while elevating security alerts at major landmarks in Delhi, including government buildings, airports, and metro stations.
Home Minister Amit Shah indicated the involvement of a Hyundai i20 in the blast, stating, “We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation,” emphasizing that CCTV footage from adjacent locations will be scrutinized.
Countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Argentina, Sri Lanka, Iran, Morocco, and Australia have conveyed their condolences, alongside travel advisories for their citizens currently in India.
The US Embassy in New Delhi advised its citizens to “stay clear of the areas surrounding the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk” and remain vigilant. “Our hearts go out to those affected by this horrific explosion in New Delhi,” they stated, confirming multiple casualties.
The UK High Commission echoed this sentiment, updating its travel advice for British citizens and urging adherence to local authorities’ directions. “My deepest thoughts are with everyone impacted by the explosion near the Red Fort,” remarked Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India.
French Ambassador Thierry Mathou expressed his condolences on behalf of the French nation, while Argentina’s Ambassador Mariano Caucino showed solidarity, offering prayers for the victims’ families.
Statements of sympathy were also released by Sri Lanka, Morocco, Australia, and Iran, all condemning the attack and extending support to India during this somber time.
Preliminary findings suggest the attack may have been timed to coincide with the evening rush hour near this popular monument, one of Delhi's most frequented spots. Forensic experts and anti-terror units have been mobilized to gather evidence at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that at least eight victims were either in or around the car at the time of the explosion; their identities have yet to be verified.
The Delhi Police, National Investigation Agency (NIA), and intelligence agencies are working in concert to trace the explosives' source and uncover any potential terrorist affiliations.
In the wake of the explosion, security protocols have been intensified not only in Delhi but also in major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Authorities have called on the public to remain watchful and report any suspicious behavior.
As the capital grieves, this incident has reignited serious discussions regarding urban security and preparedness in light of escalating global terror risks.
