Investigation Launched in Delhi Car Blast Under Anti-Terrorism Legislation

Investigation Launched in Delhi Car Blast Under Anti-Terrorism Legislation

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Delhi, India – Indian officials are ramping up their inquiry into a fatal car explosion close to the iconic Red Fort, utilizing the country’s foremost anti-terrorism law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, has claimed the lives of at least eight individuals and injured 20 others, representing the first significant explosion in the capital in over a decade.

The vehicle, moving slowly, is reported to have halted at a traffic light near the busy Old Delhi marketplace before detonating around 6:52 PM, causing substantial destruction to nearby cars and buildings. Witnesses recounted a scene filled with chaos, tangled wreckage, and frightened crowds as emergency responders arrived at the scene.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia confirmed that a case has been lodged under the UAPA, alongside the Explosives Act and other criminal statutes. “We are still in the initial stages of our investigation, and it's too early for detailed comments,” Banthia stated in a briefing. Forensic teams have cordoned off the site to thoroughly collect evidence regarding the explosion's cause and origin.

Authorities are also endeavoring to trace the ownership and passengers of the vehicle, presumed among the fatalities. Relatives of the deceased have congregated at Lok Nayak hospital to identify their loved ones, all while heightened security protocols are enforced across Delhi and critical national facilities.

Federal Home Minister Amit Shah reassured citizens that “all possible angles” are being examined, and security bodies are working collaboratively to expedite the probe.

The Red Fort, a historical Mughal monument and a vital symbol of India’s cultural heritage, attracts tourists year-round and is the site for the Prime Minister’s annual Independence Day speech. Despite the blast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proceeded with his scheduled trip to Bhutan on Tuesday morning.

Authorities have maintained a stringent security alert across the city, stressing the need for vigilance as investigations into this unprecedented and alarming attack continue in the capital.
