At least nine people have died and five are missing after record heavy rains caused floods in central Vietnam, officials said on Wednesday.
Six people lost their lives in Danang and the nearby ancient town of Hoi An. The floods have also damaged over 103,000 houses, mostly in popular tourist cities like Hue and Hoi An.
The country’s disaster agency said that Hue and Hoi An received more than 1,000 millimetres of rain in just 24 hours — the highest on record. Many areas remain underwater, with houses submerged up to their roofs.
In Hue, most parts of the city are flooded, while in Danang, rivers and reservoirs are overflowing. Officials warned of more flooding, flash floods, and landslides in the coming days.
Heavy rain is expected to continue across central Vietnam for the next two days, with some areas likely to receive over 400 millimetres of rain.
Vietnam often faces deadly storms and floods between June and October, causing heavy losses every year.
