Spain advanced to the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time in six years, achieving a comeback win against the Czech Republic. The tie concluded with a score of 2-1 in Spain's favor, despite the absence of their ace, world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who pulled out due to a hamstring injury just before the tournament.
The opening singles encounter did not favor Spain, as Pablo Carreno Busta fell to Jakub Mensik in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Ranked 89th globally, Carreno Busta struggled against Mensik's strong serves and 20 aces. Despite breaking Mensik’s serve during the initial set, he couldn’t keep the momentum, allowing Mensik to clinch victory with key breaks in both sets and giving the Czech Republic an early lead.
Spain rebounded impressively in the second singles match with Jaume Munar achieving his maiden Davis Cup win by defeating Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4. Munar’s composed performance saw him break his opponent’s serve once in each set, leveling the tie at 1-1 and showcasing Spain’s depth beyond Alcaraz.
The decisive doubles match featured veteran Marcel Granollers, at 39 years old, partnering with Pedro Martinez against Mensik and Tomas Machac in a gripping match. Both sets reached tie-breaks, where Granollers and Martinez narrowly triumphed 7-6(8), 7-6(8), thus propelling Spain into the semi-finals. The game highlighted the essence of strategy, teamwork, and perseverance as Spain recovered from a rocky start.
Similarly, Germany also secured a dramatic victory to enter the last four. Following Tomas Etcheverry's impressive 23-ace performance delivering a singles win for Argentina, Germany retaliated strongly. Alexander Zverev overcame Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 7-6(3), setting the stage for a decisive doubles match. In the ultimate doubles showdown, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz took on Horacio Zeballos and Andres Molteni. An intense battle lasting nearly two and a half hours concluded with the German pair winning 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(10) after rallying back from saved match points to secure their path to the semi-finals.
In other developments, Italy, as the host nation for the Davis Cup, progressed to the semi-finals despite the absence of world number two Jannik Sinner and world number eight Lorenzo Musetti, defeating Austria in Bologna. They are set to face Belgium next, aiming for a third consecutive Davis Cup title.
The semi-finals are set to deliver exhilarating competition as Spain faces off against Germany, while Italy prepares to take on Belgium. Both matchups exemplify the unpredictability and high level of skill that characterizes the Davis Cup as one of the premier team events in international tennis. Spectators can anticipate fast-paced action, thrilling rallies, and brilliant performances from the world’s leading players.
